This is the second of five books showcasing The Golden Years of Rave…. From 1988 to 1992. One book for each sweat soaked year.
At the start of 1989, Acid House and the Balearic sound that had defined the previous year began to fade, making way for new strands of house music, among them Hip House. The shift didn’t happen overnight; Acid and Balearic tracks still filled dance floors, but the energy was changing. The music was getting harder, faster, and more intense, matching the growing scale and momentum of the scene itself.
In this book (1989) we continue where we left off in book 1, showcasing the early Raves, acknowledging the promoters, spotlighting the best artists and of course showcasing the amazing music! We'll visit club nights and the pioneering DJs who were there at the very start. We'll continue to explore the scene and how it
was affected by the law, the authorities, drugs and the media. We'll look at the ever present flyer, share links to the best footage and of course give you access to the best curated mixes that soundtracked this glorious year.
The year 1989 is often grouped with 1988, the previous year, under the label “The Second Summer of Love.” Although ‘summer’ is singular, it covers both 1988 and 1989, since the Rave movement continued across both years. Grouping them together is also convenient, as they were the final summers of the 1980s - and, of course, the sun was shining!
I will continue to share my personal experiences and I hope in writing these books, Ravers elsewhere will be inspired to relive their experiences and pass down the ethos of Raves to later generations.
What I will mention is that we, the Ravers, were filled with this new hope, a new beginning of sorts, this new music, relaxed dress sense and it made for an exciting time! PLUR was everywhere.. Peace, Love, Unity and Respect!
As I mentioned in the last book none of us took drugs of any sort. Well, this year that would change...

GENESIS
After the amazing 1988 NYE party, the guys agreed to carry on and do more events starting the very next week. However, three days later, while the guys were working on the decor, the local superintendent showed up.

As per the first book, to hear the music played at Raves in 1989 I've compiled a list of 200 tunes and had them expertly mixed for you!
These tunes were in my opinion the biggest of the year. Splitting them into playlists of forty-a-piece, I've then commissioned a DJ to create 5 mixes, roughly running at 3 hours each.

Now let's be honest here, there are many artists who lay claim to being the first or say they were there at the very beginning of this amazing scene we call Rave. However, there are none more significant or important than the artist Adamski. In my opinion, Adamski is THE Artist that defines this heady era of Acid House and The Rave scene.
This year, promoters stepped up their game creatively. Eye catching flyers began circulating, clearly advertising when and where events would be held. While some stuck to simple black-and-white design - and others still kept locations secret until you made a phone call - many pushed the boundaries. Some brought in graphic designers, while others lifted striking images from books to promote their raves.
my story
Having heard and danced to Acid House for the first time in September of 1988 and experienced Prestatyn in November later that year I knew this was what the future held for me. I had to find a regular club playing this new music, and not just for half an hour or an hour before returning back to the chart hits of the day.
No way... It had to be all night!
pirate radio
In 1989, Pirate radio blew up all over the country, with stations operating from any venue they could find. Broadcasting mainly from tower blocks, they played the music we all danced to at raves providing the soundtrack to the Second Summer of Love.
Every city had at least one station playing this new sound, and in London, some went on to become highly influential.

I am very thankful that I was born at a time and was of an age to experience the rave scene in all its glory. From the very beginning, through Acid House to full on Hardcore that dominated the raves in 1992. This is the first of five books documenting the main players and my experiences of that scene. A Cheesy Quaver? Yep, and proud to be one! Njoi!
