WELCOME RAVERS
and non ravers
This is the first of five books showcasing The Golden Years of Rave… From 1988 to 1992. One book for each sweat-soaked year. In this book (1988) we unveil the first Raves, acknowledge the early promoters, spotlight the best artists and, of course, we will be celebrating the amazing music!
We’ll visit club nights and the pioneering DJs who were there at the very start. Before exploring how the scene was affected by the law, the authorities, drugs and the media.
We'll look at the ever-present flyer and the power of guerrilla marketing. We'll also share links to witness the best footage for each year. Plus, get access to the best curated mixes that soundtrack these glory days, so you can fully get a feel for what we, the Ravers, call The Golden Years.
Throughout I'll share my personal experiences. Hailing from Birmingham, most of my Raving was done in the Midlands. However I did venture down south and travel up north to experience some of the greatest Raves to ever take place. I hope in writing these books, Ravers elsewhere will be inspired to relive their experiences and pass down the ethos of Raves to later generations. I, for one, would love to discover other Ravers' experiences from all across the UK, as each individuals’ recounts will surely differ from mine.

THE FIRST
RAVES
We explore the very First Raves in detail and the nights that inspired our very first promoters.
THE music
To hear the music played at Raves in 1988 I've compiled a list of 200 tunes and had them expertly mixed for you! These tunes were in my opinion the biggest of the year. Splitting them into playlists 0f forty-a-piece, I’ve then commissioned a DJ to create 5 mixes, roughly running at 3 hours each.
THE
artists
Right out of the gates there were a number of artists, bands, DJs and performers who spearheaded the Rave movement and I want to spotlight the key players from 1988 who really made it all happen.
THE flyer
Long before flyers became like posters that we blu-tacked to our walls, most were hand drawn, printed up and distributed quickly. The days of full colour, laminated and designed by professionals was still a long way off. Sure, one or two nights with a promoter and money to spend delivered the goods, but the majority were all done on a budget. Just get the basic info down, get them mass produced and distributed as fast as you can was the goal.
my story
In 1988 I found my first taste of freedom in a tiny Lower Gornal flat, so small I could change the record from my bed, yet it quickly became party central, with friends crammed in and music pumping until the police came knocking.
rave at the cave

THE
drugs
We explore the drugs taken by Ravers!
pirate radio
Along with flyers and word-of-mouth spreading the rumours of Raves, pirate radio played a massive part in not only playing the kind of music we wanted to hear, but in letting us know where the Raves were happening. Dates, times and meeting places would be given out across the airwaves helping us the Ravers find the party.

and Much Much Much More!!
I am very thankful that I was born at a time and was of an age to experience the rave scene in all its glory. From the very beginning, through Acid House to full on Hardcore that dominated the raves in 1992. This is the first of five books documenting the main players and my experiences of that scene. A Cheesy Quaver? Yep, and proud to be one! Njoi!
